Google and HP said on 23 September that their Google Beam meeting system is shipping to business customers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan. The product, sold as HP Dimension with Google Beam, is intended for meetings between people in different locations.
What is different from an ordinary video call?
The companies describe a large display, camera system and spatial sound designed to make the person at the other end appear closer to life size and more three-dimensional. People do not need a headset. Google says the system works with Google Meet and Zoom. Those are the makers’ descriptions, not a Gbabeski test of how natural a call feels.
This is already being used in trials and workplaces, according to the companies. Google names Bain & Company as a recruitment-call pilot and says Netflix and Capital Group are among early customers. It also says selected Industrious workspaces in four US cities will take bookings to try the system from October.
For readers in Nigeria, the key limitation is availability: neither company lists Nigeria among the six current shipping destinations or gives a Nigerian launch date. The announcements do not state a price for Nigerian buyers. For now, the expansion chiefly matters to organisations operating in the named markets; local access remains an open question.
