Tithing and other money related church discussions have blown up a lot in 2018 and despite no scriptural backing for the church taking so much money from its members, ‘It works for me’ has become a lot of tithing Christians’ justification of paying tithe.
It begs the question, what do Christians base their faith on? Experience or the Word of God? So again, I ask, are Christian beliefs based on fresh inspiration by the Holy Spirit in which case the bible is now out of date and we could just be Christians based on our own inner voices (sometimes used in exchange for the Holy Spirit). Or the truth being unchangeable (same yesterday, today and forever) is one and it’s the holy bible?
It’s been pointed out that the age-old tithing doctrine is not that which is endorsed by Jesus the master himself or any of his disciples. There is not a single place in the new testament where Jesus endorsed tithing for his followers or paid tithe himself. If you are a student of the bible, you will also find that none of the disciples paid tithe.
Yeah, I know and before you say it, Mathew 23:23 – “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law–justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.”
It is interesting how the non-ambiguous scripture above which was directed to teachers of the law and Pharisees has now become the corner stone of today’s tithing doctrine. How is it not obvious that the above was a protest against a system that Jesus believe to be wrong? Yes, I said it, everything in that scripture was a protest pointing out the mocked process that focuses on just the money side of a system and ignoring the humanitarian? Not ignoring the fact that this was talking to the teachers of the law, the same law Jesus came to abolish. The same law that has become a curse to practice in bits and pieces. To gain heaven through the law is to fulfil all the law, but how many Christians today know all of that law let alone fulfil all of it? And of all the important message in that scripture, the only one religious leaders get excited about is the phrase ‘Yes, you should tithe!’, think motive!
You try to point this out to today’s tithing Christian and they’ll tell you ‘it works for me’ as if tithing will work for them if they turn up at their job and slept all day! As Christians, we’re meant to be examples of God’s grace and mercies giving us access to him and by his grace we make heaven without needing to fulfil all the difficult letters of the law, yet Christians reckon the grace is to make them rich! If tithing works for you as a Christian and you’re okay and not broke, hence why you’ll not let it go imagine how hard it would be for that wealthy billionaire (in dollars) who doesn’t tithe to start tithing?
By the same logic, what reason would you reckon the richest people in the world would have to U-turn their non-tithing lifestyle to becoming a Christian when whatever they currently do now (which is not tithing) works for them? The proof is in the pudding won’t you say?
